Prince explained the meaning of “Purple Rain” as follows: “When there’s blood in the sky – red and blue = purple … purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain.” “Purple Rain” was originally written as a country song and intended to be a collaboration with Stevie Nicks.
The album spent 24 consecutive weeks atop on the Billboard 200 and was on the chart for a total of 122 weeks. “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” reached #1, while “Purple Rain” peaked at #2 and “I Would Die 4 U” peaked at #8. In May 1996, the album was certified 13× Platinum . Its total sales stand at 25 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.
